Qld woman almost killed after rock smashes through car windshield

A Queensland woman says she could have been killed after three men hurled a large rock at her car while she was driving along a highway, smashing her windscreen and injuring her passenger.

Elizabeth Frequin, from Townsville on the state's coast, says her and her friend were driving along one of the town's biggest roads when they saw three boys running along the highway.

"I started to slow down because they ran across the road onto the median strip and then onto our side of the road - I didn't want to hurt anyone," Ms Frequin told Yahoo7.

"I thought I was going to hit them but then they threw a huge rock at my car - it was the loudest bang I ever heard."

Ms Frequin said the throw was strong enough to break the glass and the rock hit her friend's shoulder, which is still sore the next day.

"Glass sprayed everywhere," she said. "We were sitting in glass, had glass in our hair, and got glass in our clothes."

Ms Frequin said she then got out of her car and started yelling at the men.

When she realised there was three of them, she said she felt outnumbered and took a step back while her friend called police.

"They told us to get a tow truck and make a statement in the morning," she said.

Ms Frequin's dad ended up driving her car the 10-minute trip home as the cost of a tow truck "would be more than it would cost to get the glass fixed".

They ended up going to the station on the same night to make a statement.

Ms Frequin said it wasn't the first occurrence that night of rocks being thrown at cars. It's understood there were at least another six cars this happened to, according to a community Facebook page.

"It's really scary," Ms Frequin said. "You can't imagine what it is like but it sickens me that these people do this kind of thing."

"If I had a baby in the backseat, who knows what would have happened to them.

"I'm out of pocket and couldn't go to work today because of them - It's disgusting."

A spokesperson for Queensland Police said they were made aware of "a number of incidents on Saturday night involving multiple cars and rocks being thrown".
