WATCH: Terrified children cling to each other as killer whales swim towards them

A pair of young swimmers have had a close call after two giant orca whales swam dangerously close as they took a dip in the sea.

Remarkable footage shows the moment the two children appear to freeze with fear at Enclosure Bay on New Zealand's Waiheke Island on Thursday afternoon, 1News reports.

They can then be seen frantically swimming to shore as the huge mammals move beyond them.

Bystander Shane Watt, who filmed the video, reveals the moment a sense of panic came over beachgoers as the whales appeared.

"We were terrified just watching," he said.

"It took us a minute to calm down afterwards so I can't imagine what the adrenaline would've been like for them."

Two kayakers were eventually able to retrieve the children from the water unharmed.
