Fishermen catch huge bull shark near Sydney beach popular with swimmers

Two men have managed to reel in a large bull shark near a beach popular with swimmers in Sydney’s south.

A photo of the two men with their massive catch was posted on the Sydney’s Fishing Forum Facebook page on Thursday.

The post claimed the shark, caught along Georges River at Picnic Point, weighed more than 100kg and was more than three metres long.

The shark was caught at Picnic Point on the Georges River near Revesby Beach, a popular area for swimming, fishing and water sports.

Bill Moon, from Mac’s Bait Bar in Blakehurst, said Georges River was still a desirable spot for a dip despite “a few” shark attacks recorded over “a long period”.

Picnic Point Fishing Club’s Dr Wayne Peake, who has lived near Georges River his whole life, told the Canterbury-Bankstown Express in December there are more sharks in the area because of the cleanliness of the river and increasing numbers of fish.

But Dr Peake said you shouldn’t “hold your breath” waiting for another attack to happen since the last confirmed one in Georges River was 70 years ago.

“There’s been all these opportunities for the last 70 years and no one has been bitten,” he said.

“But I wouldn’t be swimming around there.”
