WATCH: Man drives truck off pier at 70km/h to evade police

Incredible footage shows how a US police chase ended with a fleeing suspect driving off a pier at more than 70 km/h.

The driver can be seen speeding down the pier, tailed by police, before launching himself into the Columbia River.

Residents alerted police to a man, later identified as Timofey Erofeeff, 27, who was trespassing on boats docked at the marina at North Tongue Point, in Astoria, Oregon.

Investigating police discovered the driver had several parole violations for various offences.

Authorities were ready to take him into custody when he fled and drove down the pier, triggering a police chase, which resulted in Erofeeff refusing to back down.

The driver managed to get out of his submerged vehicle and swim back to the pier, but needed to be fished out of the water by nearby boat.

Once on dry land, Erofeeff was then arrested.

Clatsop County Sheriff records state he has been charged with six counts, including attempt to elude, criminal trespass, escape, interfering with an officer, offensive littering and reckless driving.
