Grandfather, 83, dies in hospital after Flinders St attack

An elderly man has died more than a week after being caught up in the Flinders Street attack where a number of pedestrians were struck by a vehicle in Melbourne's CBD.

Police confirmed grandfather Antonios (Anton) Crocaris, 83, died at 11.30pm Friday after spending more than a week in hospital.

Mr Crocaris' family said In a statement the "hero" was irreplaceable and had been "cruelly taken away in a senseless act of violence."

"These circumstances are devastating to our family," the statement read.

"Dad is simply irreplaceable and we will never fully recover from this loss."

The family said Mr Crocaris leaves behind three children, Freda, Tony and Bill, and three grandchildren, Verity, Lysander and Jackson.

"[He was a] friend to all and proud citizen of Australia," they said.

"Our deepest gratitude to the wonderful people of Melbourne and dedicated first responders who rendered him and others every assistance.

"Special mention to the caring staff of The Alfred Intensive Care Unit."

Hospitals treated 19 other people injured during the December 21 incident, with six patients remaining in hospital.

Following the incident, Saeed Noori, 32, was charged with 18 counts of attempted murder and one count of conduct endangering life.

"Homicide Squad detectives are expected to upgrade one of those charges to murder," Victoria Police said in a statement.
