Family of driver who crashed into Falkholt family speaks out after horrific NSW tragedy

The family of the driver who died when his car crashed into a family of four on the NSW south coast, killing the parents and leaving their daughters fighting for life, have broken their silence.

On Friday, Craig Anthony Whitall's family spoke about the tragic crash, describing him as an "awesome father" who "did the best he could".

"He did the best he could and you couldn't ask anymore of him," his son Shane told Seven News.

"That's all you can ask of anyone, to do the best they can."

His mother Trish said she is hurt that people are talking badly about her son. He has been described as a serial driving offender and drug user in reports following the Boxing Day tragedy.

"He was very private and didn't like people talking about him but the worst part is, he has grandkids that can read, that are listening to it," she said.

Home and Away actress Jessica Falkholt, 28, who is a graduate from the National Institute of Dramatic Art, and her 21-year-old sister were passengers in their parent's car which collided with another vehicle on Boxing Day.

Witnesses pulled the young women from the wreckage as the vehicles were engulfed in flames, but her parents died instantly. Mr Whithall, in the second car, also died.

Annabelle was still fighting for life in Liverpool Hospital while Jessica remained in a critical condition in St George Hospital on Friday.

Mr Whithall had previous traffic offences and had spent time in jail, it has been revealed.

Earlier his family also released a statement on the tragedy.

"Our hearts are broken not only for our loss but also for the loss the Falkholt family are feeling," they said.
