Christmas opening hours: Everything you need to know

For many major supermarkets, retailers and businesses, the Christmas period is the only time they close their doors.

Australians can struggle to figure out where to go for last minute essentials before the big day on Monday.

Here's a guide to what's open over the eight days of Christmas.

The week of Christmas

The largest shopping centre in Australia, Chadstone in Melbourne's southeast, has tailored its hours for those last-minute shoppers.

From December 18 until Friday the 22nd, the centre and retailers, including David Jones and Myer, will be open from 9am until midnight - an extra 25 shopping hours.

Then on Saturday, Chadstone will open its doors from 8am and stay open for a massive 34 hours.

Most Westfield Shopping Centres, including Bondi Junction and Sydney city, will have normal hours for the start of the week and trade until midnight on Thursday.

In New South Wales and South Australia, there will be a "Non-Stop Shop" of 35 hours with live entertainment at select Woolworths stores from Thursday to Friday.

Some Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets will extend hours until midnight from Tuesday through to Saturday, but shoppers are advised to check the hours for their local store online.

Those looking to stock up on alcohol in the Christmas lead up are in luck, with Dan Murphy's open until 9pm each day this week and BWS open until 10pm.

Christmas Eve

Most supermarkets, bottle shops and shopping centres will have normal trading hours on Sunday.

Dan Murphy's and BWS are open until 9pm and 10pm respectively. Cellarbrations will be open until 5.30pm.

Christmas Day

Unfortunately for shoppers who forget something for Christmas Day, barely anything will be open on Monday.

The best bet for food on the day is finding a restaurant as a fair few choose to open.

Some local businesses, including corner stores and bottle shops, might also open on the 25th.

Boxing Day

Stores will reopen for Boxing Day and many shopping centres and retailers will have extended hours for bargain-hunters wanting to get in on the Boxing Day sales.

Melbourne's Chadstone centre will be open from 7am to 10pm. Westfield Sydney CBD and Bondi will also open at 7am, with other centres around the country opening between 7am and 9am.

Many Woolworths and Coles will stay open until 10pm next Tuesday for people needing to stock up after the 24-hour closure. Most Aldi stores will be open from 9am to 6pm, but this may vary so shoppers are arvised to check their local store's hours.
