Man who attacked mum, daughter with chainsaw could be free in two years

A New South Wales woman whose ex-partner attacked her and her mother with a chainsaw is shocked that he could be free from jail in two years.

Chloe and Julie Griffiths couldn’t hide their anguish when they left court in Port Macquarie on Wednesday afternoon.

They’re devastated Chloe’s ex-partner Terry Purvis, 31, could be out of jail in just two years.

She fought him off when he cut his way into her Port Macquarie home in August in 2016.

Purvis was sentenced to five and a half years’ prison for the terrifying attack, but the mother and daughter don’t believe the penalty matches the crime. He’ll be eligible for parole in two years.

"Empty,” Julie said of how she is feeling.

“Like I'm not worth anything. My life wasn't worth anything."

They're urging other victims of domestic violence to seek help and are calling for the courts to be tougher on offenders.

"They say they want to take a stand against domestic violence and it's examples like this - no one is standing up for what's right,” Chloe said.

The judge accepted Purvis has shown remorse and has a reasonable prospect of rehabilitation.
