Being cooped up on a plane for hours on end can take its toll on even the most tolerant of flyers.

For most passengers, the experience is made even worse when served an underwhelming in-flight meal.

But its the food and drink consumed before the flight that has many feeling worse for wear.

According to Skyscanner Australia, there are six things you shouldn't have if you want to avoid making your long-haul flight any worse.

Fast Food

Airports are filled with fast-food restaurants enabling you to get a quick bite before jumping on a flight. But stuffed full with saturated fat, a burger and fries is a big no no if you want to avoid an in-flight stomach ache.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Despite constant childhood reminders that eating your greens is good for you, having them before a flight is not. Vegetables such as broccolli and cauliflower will leave you bloated and gassy.

Salty Snacks

Tastebuds become numb at high altitudes and leaves us craving salty snacks rich in flavour. But indulging in a packet of crisps or a bag of peanuts can result in dehydration and possible bloating.

Alcohol

Alcohol is a drink that will leave you seriously dehydrated and is one to avoid at all costs. Many like to indulge in an airport beer or glass of wine to kick off their holiday but will only make it an unhappy start. The high pressure will also effect the body's tolerance and will result in a temperamental stomach.

Caffeine

Tea and coffee are the other drinks that will also leave you dehydrated not to mention increase unplanned toilet breaks. Caffeinated drinks disrupt your sleeping pattern and will leave you feeling lethargic on arrival.

Carbonated drinks

It's no surprise to find fizzy drinks such as coke or lemonade on the list. Bubbly beverages will leave you filled with gas and an uncomfortable bloating feeling that is easily avoided with safer options such as a glass of water.
