'Not what you call a happy meal': Mum nearly dies after biting into McDonald's burger

A mum reportedly nearly died after taking a bite out of a mouldy McDonald’s bun which prompted her to go into anaphylactic shock.

Shanie Granfield, from Rushden, north of London, is allergic to penicillin - a mould-based medication.

She was left gasping for air with a swollen face after biting into a South African stack burger, the Sun reports.

Without an epi-pen on her, she was worried she would "drop dead" in front of her four children.

Instead, she downed six antihistamines in the hope her throat would clear as an ambulance rushed to the scene.

Paramedics were able to help her, but warned it would be weeks until she was back to full health.

Ms Granfield said she felt her lips begin to swell, and her face burn and itch after taking a bite from the burger.

She knew a bad enough reaction could kill her within about five minutes.

"It was awful for the children to see,” the mum of four said.

“They were in pieces. That's not what you call a 'happy meal'."

The 23-year-old contacted McDonald’s after her experience and said she received an apology along with more than A$60 in shop vouchers.

But Ms Granfield said she just wants assurances it won’t happen again at any restaurants.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman said food quality and safety was of the “utmost importance” to the franchise.

"It seems that on this occasion we didn't meet those standards,” she said.

"As a precaution, all other burger buns with the same expiry date were removed from the kitchen.”

She said McDonald’s had undergone an investigation.
