Baby killer who punched newborn daughter to death is found dead in prison cell
A father who was serving a jail sentence for murdering his newborn baby daughter has been found dead in his jail cell.
Liam Deane, from Yorkshire, was jailed last month for life with a minimum of 10 years for murdering his daughter Luna in July.
On the weekend, he was found dead in his cell.
Deane had admitted to punching and shaking the two-day-old infant because "she would not stop crying", The Mirror reports.
Luna died in hospital three days after the brutal attack from "catastrophic brain injuries".
Serving prisoner John Westland, 28, appeared before Leeds Magistrates this week, accused of killing Deane.
Circumstances around Deane's death are unclear.
A court heard that Deane had squeezed and punched Luna after losing his temper.
The prosecutor told the court the baby suffered injuries to her brain, body and face.
“He (Deane) said he was responsible for all of the injuries that she had suffered and he said that Luna had not settled down and he lost control," the prosecutor said.
Deane had told Luna's mother that she had fallen in the night and hit her head.
A doctor however, concluded she had died after suffering head trauma, leaving her with "catastrophic brain injuries".
Deane broke down when interviewed by police and admitted he was responsible for attacking the baby.
Dean's representation said "there is simply no explanation for the defendant's behaviour".
"His actions were wholly and utterly out of character for him. The defendant will have a very long time to reflect upon his terrible behaviour."
