Prawn prices set to rise to record levels for Christmas

Seafood lovers are being told to stockpile prawns and freeze them in the seven weeks leading up to Christmas.

Prices are at record highs with Queensland king prawns selling for $40 a kilogram and the advice is to buy them now before there is a further price surge.

The price hike is being blamed on recent commercial fishing reforms, the fallout from this year's white spot disease outbreak and increased demand from China.

But some are questioning whether the seafood will remain fresh after sitting in a freezer for several weeks.

Queensland prawn operators have said there is no shortage of the crustacean, but instead the demand has skyrocketed.

Even the prime minister has expressed concerns over his Christmas dinner.

"Do you think I should lay off the prawns for the next month?" Mr Turnbull told Sunrise.

Nutritionist Susie Burrell advised to add some salt to the prawns to retain the flavour, but said seafood such as salmon was better for freezing.
