This girl was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital overnight where she remains fighting for her life.

"She's been hit and left to die on the side of the road," he said.

Witnesses say the driver, in a dark-coloured BMW, stopped briefly at the scene before fleeing.

Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene but the driver had gone.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have some information on this car. They believe it would have significant damage to the front left-hand panel and windscreen.
