Woman mauled to death by dog in Canberra, man and police injured

A woman has been mauled to death and another person attacked by a dog in Canberra.

Police were called to the Watson house in the city's north at 3.40am on Wednesday after neighbours reported the woman, aged in her late 40s, was attacked by her own dog.

A man also at the home is believed to have tried to intervene before police arrived and was taken to hospital with a substantial bite wound.

While attempting to give the woman first aid, the dog was reportedly also aggressive towards police and officers were forced to fire multiple shots to kill it.
