Andrew Denton diagnosed with advanced heart disease

Television personality Andrew Denton has been diagnosed with advanced heart disease.

The 57-year-old euthanasia campaigner will need a number of urgent bypass surgeries.

Denton walked away from the media spotlight in 2012 to advocate the legalisation of euthanasia after his father Kit died from heart failure.

He is the director of Go Gentle Australia and advocates have described his diagnosis as a "disaster" for the campaign, The Age reported.

"It's terrible for Andrew, and a disaster for the broader campaign," a supporter of Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews' assisted suicide bill said.

But manager Paul Price said the "campaign continues in full force," despite Denton stepping down to undergo surgery.
