Woman arrested after 3-year-old accidentally shoots 2-year-old brother with a handgun

A woman has been arrested after a toddler was found with an accidental gunshot wound he reportedly received from his three-year-old sibling in Colorado.

Police were called to a Driftwood Drive home about 1.45pm on Saturday where they found a two-year-old boy with an accidental gunshot wound.

The boy is said to be in a critical, but stable condition.

Colorado Springs Police Lieutenant Howard Black told Fox 31 Denver the boy was shot by a three-year-old who “found a hand gun".

“It appears to be an accidental shooting,” he said.

Monica Abeyta, 30, was arrested for felony child abuse resulting is serious bodily injury.

It’s not known what her relationship is to the children.

Alazia Gray, a neighbour who sometimes babysits the children, said she was hurt by the news.

“I just ran up to Monica and started hugging her because I know that’s hard,” she said.

“I just want to be here for her.

“Even if you put things up kids can still get into it.”

The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Special Victims Section, Crimes Against Children’s Unit are still investigating.
