A kayaker has survived a terrifying encounter with a shark, stranded in the water for minutes after the man-eater flipped his craft at Monterey Bay in California.

The shark, reported to be a Great White, thrashes about frantically, appearing to be trapped under the kayak, and then starts heading straight for the kayaker who attempted to swim to safety.

On shore Gene Mace begins filming the frightening scene and alerts his wife to what is happening.
