Top Colombian cop explains how drug mules are ‘tricked’

A top cop behind the arrest of accused Aussie drug smuggler Cassie Sainsbury says there is a specific technique drug traffickers use to dupe unsuspecting people into committing crimes according to reports.

The anti-narcotics cop, Colonel Rodrigo Soler, told News Corp agents from various drug syndicates prey on people going through financial hardship to transport their drugs across borders.

Soler, the commander of the anti-drugs police at El Dorado International where Sainbury was arrested last month reportedly said economic problems were a key reason drug mules did the crime.

Cassandra Sainsbury, 22, is accused of attempting to smuggle 5.8 kilograms of cocaine out of Colombia before a tip-off from the US saw her arrested moments before her flight.

However, following her arrest it was revealed that Sainsbury had debt following the collapse of her personal training business in South Australia.

Sainsbury's family continues to maintain she is innocent, with her fiancé Scott Broadbridge telling reporters he was certain she wasn't involved in the drug trade.

Broadbridge is still waiting to be reunited with Sainsbury.

He spent hours at the Colombian prison overnight but was turned away by guards.

Broadbridge was expected to be able to meet with her during official visiting hours today.

Sainsbury's mother and sister have also arrived in Bogota but haven't been able to visit her either.

The Adelaide native told a reporter she wants to see her fiancé before she sees her family.
