'In the right place': Father of Salt Creek monster Roman Heinze says jail is where he belongs

The elderly father of the Salt Creek monster Roman Heinze has revealed his son is where he belongs: in jail.

Seven News can now reveal the exclusive interviews with shocked family members in the days after Roman Heinze was caught.

The 15 months since Heinze's dramatic arrest have taken a toll on his frail father.

"I had a very bad day yesterday," Werner Heinze told of the day his son was unmasked as the Salt Creek predator.

He said he's heartbroken, but relieved.

"Where he is now, he's in the right place. He's well looked after. That's all what it is," Werner said.

Sickening details about the father-of-five's violent crimes have sent shockwaves through the southern suburbs and left parents at a school near his home on edge.

"Well it's not safe for the children if he can access the school,” one local parent said.

“I mean he's behind bars at the moment but if he gets out it's not good."

In the days after Heinze's arrest, family - including his ex-wife - couldn't believe the allegations.

"He's never put hands on family at least not on me or the kids, you know."

His son Jason admitted it was strange his father was meeting up with backpackers, and hoped it was a misunderstanding.

Quizzed of his father’s innocence, Jason told 7 News at the time of the arrest: "You never know what the other parties, the victims, you don't know if they were on anything, if they're on drugs or if their story was a bit exaggerated."

We now know it wasn't.

Heinze will be sentenced next Wednesday.
