Egg the Pug's owner 'dumped dog in Sydney river' after fake abduction

Egg the Pug's owner has confessed he dumped the dog at the bottom of a Sydney river after it choked on a dog treat.

Qiushi Xia also admitted his abduction and robbery report to police about Egg's theft in February had been a lie.

Xia pleaded guilty to making a false report in court on Thursday after faking the abduction story at Sydney Olympic Park.

On February 9 Xia said he was confronted by three armed men while walking the pug.

The claim launched a citywide hunt for the little dog and a social media frenzy after police made an appeal to the public to help find Egg.

Police later confirmed 14-week-old Egg had died with the owner admitting he had choked on a treat.

In Burwood Court on Thursday it was heard Xia dumped Egg's body in the Parramatta river.

Today he told 7 News he did not want his girlfriend to know about the dog's death, as it was the second dog he had lost.

The couple had also owned another pug "Pepper" together who choked on a dog toy and died.

“I don’t want my girlfriend to find out about her dog’s death cause he’s the second dog I’ve lost OK,” Xia told 7 News.

“I did all of this to cover the fact that the dog died."

The owner was charged with making a false representation resulting in a police investigation.
