Mother's agonising wait after daughter pricked by dirty needle

The mother of a two-year-old girl is warning other parents to be extra cautious after her daughter was pricked by a discarded and dirty needle at a Geelong toilet block.

Ashlee Vipont's daughter Aleira was helping her mum in the toilet when she was pricked by the syringe.

Aleira reached into a toilet paper holder at the public toilets. She said "ow" and the needle fell to the floor.

Instantly, mum Ashlee started to panic. She said, "I noticed blood on it."

Two-year-old Aleira was taken to the hospital and had a blood test done. She is now back to her bubbly self.

However, mum Ashlee said she has to wait six months to find out whether anything has been transmitted.

She said, "It's always in the back of your head, there is the chance that something could come out of it."

The toilet block in Geelong is near a playground and swimming pool. The council said the area is cleaned regularly and checked for syringes.

Brett Luxford of Geelong Council said: "There is a sharps disposal unit nearby, the council will look at installing them inside the toilets, to protect others".
