'I was simply embarrassed': Pauline Hanson defends eye roll during new senator’s speech

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has defended rolling her eyes during her new senator’s maiden speech.

Malcolm Roberts speech concluded with a tribute to Senator Hanson – where he dished out compliments for her, including being a “woman of great courage”.

“No one can show testimony to my belief in the enduring power of human nature more than the great Pauline Hanson,” he said.

“Our Pauline, the people's Pauline. She is one of us and we are just like her.

“She's a woman of great courage to whom I owe being able to stand here today.

“Pauline listens to understand and is honest, courageous and persistent.”

As Senator Roberts sang Hanson’s praises, she rolled her eyes, later claiming it was due to being “embarrassed” by the ordeal.

“I just wanted to say thank you to Malcolm Roberts for his praise during his maiden speech today,” she later wrote on Facebook.

“I wasn't rolling my eyes out of disrespect to Malcolms kind words, I was simply embarrassed.”

Senator Hanson said she had spent 20 years with most people taking “pot shots”.

“I guess I don't take compliments too well,” she wrote on Facebook.
