'Difficult period': Tromp father breaks silence over family's bizarre off-grid trip

The father who disappeared in a bizarre off-grid trip with his family has broken his silence and apologised to the community for the "difficult period".

Mark Tromp, 51, and Jacoba Tromp, 53, fled with their three children, Ella, Mitchell and Riana, to New South Wales after they reportedly became overwhelmed by paranoia and fear.

The Melbourne family split up and police were called over concerns for their safety. However, over a period of five days and one-by-one each member re-appeared alive, “safe and well”.

Mr Tromp was the last to be found at about 6pm on Saturday in Wangaratta after being spotted by a passer-by.

On Tuesday he released a statement, which apologised for the time and resources spent searching after the family's disappearance.

“In recent days my family has been through a difficult period,” the statement read.

“We will soon be reunited and together, I hope that we will begin to make sense of our ordeal and return to a normal life.

"I am conscious of the burden these events have placed upon our extended family, friends and the community resources devoted to our aid.

“Without reservation, I apologise for the hurt and concern caused by these events.

“On behalf of our family, I express our deep gratitude to Victoria and New South Wales Police, as well as the health care professionals who have looked after our physical and mental well-being.

“More than anything, my family and I need time to recover and receive appropriate assistance, including mental health services. To this end, we request that media organisations respect our request for privacy."

Earlier this week, police charged Mr Tromp's 22-year-old daughter Ella over the theft of a motor vehicle and possessing the proceeds of a crime on August 30 in Victoria.

However, that charge has since been dismissed under section 33 of the Mental Health Act of NSW.

Police said no other charges were expected against any other family member.
