Police believe a brawl broke out between Hamill and two other men behind the shop before the 53-year-old was stabbed "multiple times" in the upper body.

A police spokesperson has confirmed a man was rushed to The Alfred hospital with serious injuries and is now in a stable condition.

"We arrived and found one of the males had sustained multiple stab wounds. The two other males involved in the fight had left the scene," the police spokesperson said.

The former plumber is the business partner of former bikie Toby Mitchell, and currently co-owns a tattoo parlour with former AFL bad boy Jake King.

He served time in a Melbourne prison more than a decade ago for breaking the nose of womanizer Sam Newman after a dispute over Hamill’s former girlfriend Melissa Skirton.

Newman claimed Hamill “changed my face a bit” and was forced to undergo plastic surgery to repair the damage in 1997.
