Sydney man to face terror charge

A Sydney man is to face terror charges in Australia after police raided homes in North Sydney and Dee Why on Wednesday.

The man, named by the ABC as Renas Lelikan, was taken into custody and charged with being a member of a terrorist organisation.

It will be alleged in court that the man charged by Australian Federal Police was a member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Mr Lelikan made headlines in Australia last year after he was refused a passport on national security grounds.

The 38-year-old, who spent nine months in an Iraqi refugee camp last year, previously insisted he is not a threat after being allowed to return to Australia in October.

The accused has been remanded in custody, and is scheduled to appear in the Parramatta Local Court on Thursday via video link.

The AFP issued a release stating "there is no current or impending threat of a terrorist act to the Australian community arising from this investigation".

The accused is facing a maximum 10 years’ jail if convicted.
