Umbrella saves the life of elderly 'Mary Poppins'

An umbrella plays the role of an unlikely hero when it saves an elderly woman from falling down a manhole in a truly Mary Poppins fashion caught on CCTV.

Footage shows the elderly woman walking on a street in Leskovac located in the southern part of Serbia as she slips on the pavement.

The woman falls to her knees and appears to tumble part-way into the manhole.

But she manages to hold her umbrella high in the air, using it to catch her mid-fall.

Bystanders rush to the woman's aid and together they pull her to safety.

The Mirror reports that the manhole was left open due to construction works going on at a nearby water company and a security camera at a shop captured the incident.

The manager of Kosara Ilic told local media they were not responsible for the incident but were going to launch an investigation.
