Pilot makes emergency highway landing after forgetting to refuel plane

Running out of a fuel on the motorway is bad news for anyone, but it’s especially bad news for a pilot.

Motorists on a Russia highway caught the unusual sight earlier in the week after a light plane came to rest in the middle of a busy highway.

The footage posted online shows the Polish-made Wilga-35 looking much worse for wear on the Yaroslavskoe highway, about 65 kilometres from Moscow.

The battered looking craft pulled up in the unusual parking spot after its pilot forgot the key pre-flight procedure of putting fuel in the aircraft, The Mirror reports.

Russia’s LifeNews confirmed the plane was running on empty.

"Immediately after the accident there were reports that the failure of the engine was the reason for the emergency landing,” it reported.

Early reports suggest the fuel tank was dry. Photo: Screenshot

"But later during the technical checks of the plane is was found out that the fuel tank was empty.

“There was just no fuel at all in there."

It is believed the pilot could face legal action pending the outcome of an investigation into the very public emergency landing.
