Increase in Muslim inmates puts Halal meat on prison's Christmas menu

A Christmas menu of Halal chicken, cranberry sauce, potatoes and vegetables will be on offer for the increasing number of Muslim inmates behind bars at Australia’s super-maximum security prison.

A ‘religious-friendly’ menu will be available alongside a vegetarian option to suit the large number of terror-related criminals inside Goulburn’s Supermax prison.

The standard lunch menu, which includes ham, will be served to inmates convicted of crimes such as rape and murder – including serial killer Ivan Milat.

And we can’t forget dessert. Prisoners will also get a fruit mince pie to finish off their holiday feast.

In addition to their meals, inmates can also spend money on confectionary, toiletries, tea, coffee and various food products as part of a ‘buy-up’ program.

This year, 37 inmates will be spending Christmas in Supermax, the Daily Mail reports.

One of the newest faces in the facility is 18-year-old Raban Alou, who will spend his first Christmas behind bars this week.

Alou was locked up in October for allegedly supplying the gun that was used to kill police accountant Curtis Cheng outside a police station in Parramatta.

Earlier this year, six prisoners went on a 16-day hunger strike after their weekly allowance was cut from $100 down to $13 a week.

The inmates, all Muslim, claimed it wasn’t enough to purchase Halal meat, which costs $32 per week at the jail.

The New South Wales Department of Corrective Services was quick to deny the statement.

The jail made headlines again in August when inmate Stephen Jamieson escaped from his cell using bedsheets and a blanket.

The armed robber was the second criminal to escape from Goulburn Correction Centre within the space of four weeks.

He spent 30 hours on the run before being caught by authorities.
