Holding back tears, he told 7 News of how well-trained his companion was saying he was “friendly with everybody."

Wilbur was a quiet dog who became a much loved family pet when he failed an airport sniffer dog test.

Police cannot understand why he was attacked.

Detective senior Constable Warren Atkinson told 7 News “It’s a vicious act, just terrible for the owner.”

“There appears to be nothing stolen or signs of forced entry,” he said.

“Wilbur had never shown any aggression and was presumably safe in his backyard when this attack took place.”
