Emails reveal Kevin Rudd sought Clinton sympathy chat

Private emails have revealed that former prime minister Kevin Rudd wanted a 'sympathetic phone chat' with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after he was dumped as Labor leader in 2010.

According to released emails from Mrs Clinton's private server, US ambassador to Australia Jeffrey Bleich said Mr Rudd hadn't heard from her.

"He has received such a call from POTUS (President Barack Obama) already. But, I think he and S (Mrs Clinton) had a good relationship and he may want to talk to her about his future career goals," he said according to an email published by News Corp.

S was code for Secretary while 'POTUS' is the shorthand for the President of the United States.

ABC reports that in another email dated June 27, 2010, Mrs Clinton said she "was sorry about Kevin Rudd".

The US State department released over 4,000 emails Mrs Clinton had kept on her server on Monday.

After Mr Rudd was toppled he reportedly spoke to President Barack Obama and then he travelled to the US for some sympathy from Mrs Clinton, reports the The Age.

The former first lady had only reportedly prepared to meet Mr Rudd for a cup of tea but ended up spending the afternoon with the former PM.

Mrs Clinton, who is currently vying to be US president herself, apparently cancelled her own busy afternoon schedule to offer her time and support to Mr Rudd.

Mr Rudd was replaced by Julia Gillard after a leadership ambush in 2010.
