Teen girls arrested after filming their own police chase

Four teenage girls who allegedly stole a car and started a police chase while filming it on their mobile phone have been arrested.

A video was uploaded onto Facebook of the girls, aged between 15 and 17, swerving to avoid cars and trying to avoid police during the pursuit in Mercer, south of Auckland on Sunday.

The four teenagers have been charged with a number of offences relating to the theft of the vehicle and failing to stop for police.

Counties Manukau police's Inspector Mark Roybottom said the four teenagers do not understand the gravity of the alleged crimes.

"These youths decide to take the vehicle, they decide not to stop for police but they have no comprehension of the consequences," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

"It is not until they seriously injure or kill a passenger in their vehicle or an innocent member of the public that they realise what they are doing is no joke."

The passengers of the stolen car are heard shouting profanities at police and egging on the driver during the video until near the end where one is heard saying "slow down, I don't want to die".

In June, a suspected car thief was arrested naked after one of three police pursuit across Perth's suburbs.

It was apparently an attempt to avoid police detection, but perhaps it resulted in even more attention.

Earlier this year, a car thief refused to give up in this high-speed pursuit. Watch for the traffic cop getting caught up in the door as the guy drives away.

An elderly grandmother was also in charge of a slow-speed pursuit hitting speeds of up to 10km per hour.

The lost woman in her 80s had to be escorted home by police after going miles out of her way on her motorised scooter.
