Watch: Humble Sikh 'hero' accepts heartwarming reward
Sikh man Harmon Singh made headlines around the world last week when he removed his turban in public to help cradle the head of a young boy hit by a car.
For the 22-year-old it was an enormous gesture. According to his religion he must never remove his turban in public but that did not appear to be a factor as he rushed to help the bleeding five-year-old.
Images of Singh and other good Samaritans caring for the boy as ambulances rushed to the scene went viral and made the 22-year-old a minor celebrity in his home country of New Zealand.
Now he is on his way to a second wave of viral fame after a television news crew decided to reward him for his efforts.
Singh was hailed a hero for his efforts and his newfound notoriety led a television news crew to his home where viewers noticed something interesting – his house was almost completely unfurnished except for a few plastic garden chairs and a mattress in his bedroom.
So New Zealand's OneNews decided to pay him another visit. Singh was told it was for an interview about how he was coping with his new ound fame.
As Singh humbly denied his fame and heroism, a furniture truck pulled into the driveway and soon his sparsely decorated home was filled with a new bed, a new lounge suite and a coffee table.
“Thank you,” he wept as the journalist alongside him fought back his own tears, “It’s the biggest surprise of my life.”
Mr Singh told the New Zealand Herald he was at home when he heard the accident, which left the five-year-old boy bleeding from the head.
“I saw a child down on the ground and a lady was holding him. His head was bleeding, so I unveiled my turban and put it under his head,” he said.
People around the world hailed him for his selfless, however, Singh refused any claims he was a hero, saying anyone would have done the same for him.
While the child received life threatening injuries in the accident, he is reported to be in a stable condition.
