A national US college sorority is trying to sue a former member for publically revealing their secret handshake, according to court documents.

Phi Sigma Sigma is suing an ex ‘sister’ for posting confidential information about the sorority, including their secret handshake and door knock, on the website Penny Arcade.

The woman emphasised how secret the information she posted was by stating that many of the details were never even put into writing.

Other information she revealed includes: the oath members recite before meetings, the 'sacred words' recited by the president, and the colour of the veils new members wear during their initiation.

The sorority filed a civil suit against the alleged handshake whistle blower, which says she is in direct breach of her contract with Phi Sigma. They are seeking unspecified financial compensation for 'damage' to the organisation.

Penny Arcade, a Seattle-based 'webcomic', and the dozens of other websites that reposted the leak were served cease and desist notices by the sorority’s lawyers. Penny Arcade was the only website that refused to take down the post.

If the court approves the lawsuit, it will go to trial in a year.
