Police interview 'wanted pirate'

Police interview wanted pirate

Police are interviewing a man they believe may be the knife-wielding pirate who tried to break into the Pirates of the Caribbean film set on the Gold Coast.

A search was launched on Tuesday after a man in a pirate costume, complete with a parrot on his shoulder, pulled a knife on a security guard who stopped him from entering the set.

The wannabe buccaneer then fled into nearby bushland.

A man matching his description was spotted on the Gold Coast earlier on Wednesday, and police have confirmed they are interviewing someone in relation to the incident.

His girlfriend spoke to media outside the Coomera Police Station where he is being held.

She said her boyfriend had been carrying a knife at the time of the incident but denied he used it to threaten anybody.

"I've known this boy for years," she said.

"[He's] totally not the sort of person who would stab somebody."

She claimed he did not deliberately dress as a pirate and that the parrot was a pet they had bought from Gumtree.

"We're definitely not pirates, it's just funny we look like it," she said.

No charges have been laid.
