Club closer to hosting gym competition

Gascoyne Gymnastics Club president Beth Hudson, thronged by some of her students, takes a $2310 cheque from Carnarvon Rotary Club president Leo Kaczmarczyk.

Gascoyne Gymnastics Club is closer to being ready to host regional championships, thanks to funds raised at a Carnarvon Rotary Club dinner.

The Rotary Club held their annual Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner night, in which host families cook a three-course meal for guests.

In late September, 24 couples paid $40 a head to enjoy the meal, which also facilitates mingling by making attendees dine with different people for each course.

The event raised $2310 and was given to the gymnastics club.

“We wanted to give to a local club this year, and thought that, as a growing club with a lot of young children, they could use it,” said event co-ordinator Janis Bennett.

Gascoyne Gym Club president Beth Hudson said the need was indeed great.

“In 2010, we had 15 members, in 2011, we had 37, while last year, we had 90 — we’re now up at 110 registered members,” she said.

“We would be the biggest growth club in the North West.”

Ms Hudson said the gymnastics club was very keen to host the 2015 North West Regional Gymnastics Championship, but a good chunk of money would need to be spent.

“Gymnastics is such an expensive spot in terms of equipment,” she said.

“This money will help immensely — it will probably go on safety matting, which we’d also need if metropolitan gymnastics clubs were to ever think of coming.”

Ms Hudson said it might cost around $12,000 to deck the halls with the shock-absorbent matting.

“It’s absolutely fabulous, I feel quite blessed that they thought of us and did something,” she said.
