$20m Powerball winner’s ‘lucky’ mistake after swearing off lottery

The Powerball winner initially thought she had only won $20,000.

A new Powerball multimillionaire admits she almost didn't play her favourite numbers this week since they hadn't been successful for her lately, and only at the last minute decided to stick with them, resulting in her winning $20 million in Thursday night's draw.

The woman from the rural town of Gladstone in NSW played the same numbers she has always used, which consist of loved one's birthdays, and was the only division one entry in draw 1455, pocketing the entire jackpot.

"You know what? I was going to do away with that ticket because I hadn’t been winning anything lately," she told The Lott officials. "They’re just the same numbers I’ve been playing over and over for a very long time. I’ve been putting them in each week, but recently thought I might completely get rid of it."

Winner now in 'fairyland' after thinking she'd only won $20,000

She decided to keep the numbers for "another week" in the hope she might be "lucky" and the decision paid off.

"I got up this morning and checked my ticket. I looked at it and then ran to my family and said, 'I've won $20,000!'. They looked at it and then looked at me and said, 'No you haven't. You've won $20 million!'".

"I can't believe it. I think I'm in fairyland," she said.

She plans to buy a house for herself and also "travel the world" with loved ones, admitting she had been dreaming of receiving a call like this for years.

The winning numbers in Powerball drawn on Thursday were 7, 20, 19, 25, 10, 31 and 1 and the Powerball number was 11.
