Cavalry overcome Heat in tight battle

In the battle for the top spot in the Australian Baseball League, Perth Heat suffered a 3-2 loss in a tough opening match of the series with Canberra Cavalry at Barbagallo Ballpark in Thornlie last night.

Virgil Vasquez, in what may be his last home appearance for the Heat, pitched valiantly, only giving up a pair of solo home runs.

Cavs starter Brian Grening matched his effort, only giving up a pair solo home runs himself.

Heat import Brenden Webb arrived in Perth not long before the match and made an immediate impact with a first inning solo blast.

Heat reliever, also a new call-up, Jack Frawley was the sore-luck loser for the Heat. He gave up one unearned run in five innings of impressive relief.

David Amberson also hit a solo home run for the Heat.

Canberra shortstop Kody Hightower continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 5. He is now leading the league with an average of .409.

AAA Red Sox veteran Ryan Khoury looks to join the Heat for game two.

A crowd of 1600 watched game one.
