Standing by his sign

Bridgetown's Ford House owner Ken Rotman chained to his sign on Friday in protest against a shire council order to remove it.

When Ken Rotman received a letter on Friday ordering him to remove his business signs from South Western Highway, he decided to make a stand – literally.

He chained himself to one of the two signs, advertising his Bridgetown accommodation and gifts business Ford House.

In January last year the shire council decided to tidy up the town’s entrances by taking a harder line on signage under local laws relating to trading in public places.

Ford House is off the highway, down Eedle Terrace, so Mr Rotman has a yellow banner and sandwich board pointing to it.

Now the shire says he must remove the signs from public land beside the highway within a week or the shire will do it and bill him.

Mr Rotman said he agreed with the council’s claim that the banner was untidy.

“But we have offered to change it to make more in keeping with what they want, and they said that whatever sign we propose to council, it will be rejected.”

The Rotmans are rallying support via their email network and a petition which had 300 signatures by Tuesday morning.
