Pink diamonds still shine

Frauke Bolten-Boshammer is adamant the Kimberley’s pink diamonds are the most beautiful of all.

After two decades of gliding precious “pinks” onto the fingers of some of the region’s most well-heeled visitors, Mrs Bolten-Boshammer says the unique stones remain in her eyes the epitome of beauty.

“They are so very unusual and the Kimberley is the only place in the whole world which produces such intense colours of them,” she said.

Diamond shoppers obviously agree: whereas a top quality one carat white diamond retails for about $10,000, a similar- sized intense pink can fetch more than $500,000.

Mrs Bolten-Boshammer said although the pink stones caught her eye immediately after migrating from Germany to the Kimberley 30 years ago, it wasn’t until a visit by a friend, Claremont jeweller Doris Brinkhaus, that the idea for opening a diamond shop was born.

“Doris visited us here in 1983 and encouraged me to start my own shop,” she said.

With the Argyle Diamond Mine, the world’s largest producer of pink diamonds, on her doorstep, Mrs Bolten- Boshammer said the idea to sell them made sense.

Mrs Bolten-Boshammer celebrated 20 years in business with a party at her Kimberley Fine Diamonds store on Friday. She made special mention of her local clientele for supporting her over the past two decades.
