Bride locked in kitchen during attack
A young groom frantically locked his bride inside the kitchen of a Point Walter function centre as a gang of up to 50 juveniles threatened to kill wedding guests with bricks and glass bottles.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage from Walter's River Cafe after the Saturday night attack left seven people, including the groom, needing hospital treatment.
Guests yesterday told _The West Australian _how they barricaded themselves inside the reception area in fear as teenagers punched, kicked and stamped on those caught outside.
The groom, Bevan, who did not want his surname published, said his wife's brother begged with one of the juveniles not to kill his unconscious sibling after he was smashed in the face with a brick.
"They weren't going to stop until someone was dead," Bevan said. "I grabbed (his wife) Stacy and put her out the back in the kitchen.
"My brother-in-law went out to save his brother, who had been knocked out, and tried to drag him in and a kid jumped up on the table with two bricks and said 'you're going to die' . . . he had to plead with him to not kill him."
Wedding guest Angela Pich said the drama started about 9pm when her partner Aaron was approached by some of the juveniles near the cafe's outside toilets.
"They asked for a cigarette and didn't like the answer they got," Ms Pich said.
"All I remember is guests from the wedding helped us, dragged us away and that's when they just started throwing bottles and bricks and whatever they could. It was like some kind of an American TV show riot."
Bevan's sister required 14 stitches in her thigh.
Most guests suffered minor injuries and all have been discharged from hospital.
Bevan said 10 months of hard work and planning had been ruined by a group of "kids intent on maximum carnage".
He praised cafe staff for their "phenomenal" response. "If a couple of the people there and the manager of the cafe didn't have their wits about them to shut the gate around the cafe, we would have been going to a funeral," Bevan said.
Police last night arrested two 16-year-olds in South Lake over the attack.
One teen allegedly headbutted and spat at a police officer during the arrest.
