Jimmy Barnes has postponed the first two shows of his tour after his recent back surgery.

The Cold Chisel frontman said the shows were moved because of doctor's orders.

There were hints that a postponement was likely as the Aussie rocker had cancelled all his promo work in the lead-up to the tour after undergoing five surgeries in eight days.

"Thirty years of back-breaking work broke my back," he said after the promo work was cancelled.

"I hate missing live shows more than anything and the doctors have told me very clearly that I need to rest before the start of the tour in two weeks time, so that is my focus."

Barnes' 30:30 Hindsight tour had been due to start on October 1 at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, NSW. He will now kick off the tour at the Deni Ute Muster in Deniliquin, NSW, on October 4.

Barnes is still scheduled to play four shows around WA, beginning on November 19.
