Giant crane gives Fremantle a lift

Looming large against the rising sun, the massive structure on the dock of Fremantle's busy container port stands out above everything else.

The crane, measuring 38m at its highest point and an "outreach" of a whopping 50m, has been brought to Perth to handle cargo from the increasingly big ships that call into the port.

Port operator DP World said the container crane would be officially commissioned today during a "figurative smashing of the champagne bottle" ceremony.

"The crane sitting next to the new crane is no longer high enough to reach over the containers, given the increasing breadth of the vessels, so we've invested in a post-panamax crane to keep up with the changing trade requirements," a spokeswoman said.
