Fun Police warn Pokemon 'Trainers' to heed caution while catching 'em all

Darwin Police are urging fans of a new smartphone video game to keep out of jail as they try to 'catch' Pokemon with their GPS and phone cameras.

The Pokemon GO game allowing players to “travel between the real world and the virtual world” is rapidly gaining popularity all around the world.

Social media users globally are going snap happy posting pictures of the critters they have “caught” while exploring their cities and towns.

“Look for PokeStops located at interesting places, such as public art installations, historical markers, and monuments, where you can collect more Poke Balls and other items,” the app website instructs users.

However not every place is a safe location to "catch 'em all".

The Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services was quick to inform Pokemon "Trainers" of being safe when catching Poke Balls to add to their Pokedex.

“For those budding Pokemon Trainers out there using Pokemon GO – whilst the Darwin Police Station may feature as a Pokestop, please be advised that you don’t actually have to step inside in order to gain the Poke Balls,” the Facebook alert posted on Wednesday reads.

“It’s also a good idea to look up, away from your phone and both ways before crossing the street. That Sandshrew isn’t going anywhere fast.”

Determined not to literally become the Fun Police, the service went on to encourage players to: “Stay safe and catch 'em all!”.
