FMG poaches Shuttleworth from Barrick

Fortescue Metals Group has scored a recruitment coup, stealing former Telstra Businesswoman of the Year Julie Shuttleworth from Barrick Gold and installing her as head of the Cloudbreak operation in the Pilbara.

Ms Shuttleworth yesterday called time on her 13 years with Barrick and is expected to take up her new role as Cloudbreak general manager in a few weeks.

She has been general manager of Barrick's Granny Smith operation since 2010 and earlier this year was crowned Women in Resources champion by the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy.

While Ms Shuttleworth told _WestBusiness _ she was sad to be leaving Barrick, the tap on the shoulder from Fortescue had come at the perfect time.

The sale of Granny Smith to South Africa's Gold Fields meant she would no longer be working for her long-term employer.

She said the opportunity to run a "really big mine" and still stay in WA was too good to refuse.

It is understood Ms Shuttleworth's appointment comes amid a broader management reshuffle at Fortescue, as the company approaches the start of commercial production at the Kings deposit at its Solomon mining hub.

Her departure comes as Barrick expanded efforts to sell its remaining Australian mines, with the company reportedly seeking a buyer for its Kanowna Belle and Plutonic Mines in WA.
