Perth families were searching for the best patches of lawn at the Supreme Court Gardens from mid-afternoon for last night's Carols by Candlelight.

The crowd was treated to the voices of Perth's Lucy Durack, from the original Australian cast of Wicked and the hit musical Legally Blonde, and Perth keyboard artist and singer Jay Weston.

Event organiser David Wartzki said the calibre of performers made it one of the most spectacular Carols by Candlelight yet.

"We had bigger names here this year, which made it a bigger carols event," he said.

"It was such a perfect night and it was not too hot for mid December."

Organisers were expecting up to 10,000 people to take part in this year's Christmas Carols.

Similar numbers attended last year.

Nicole and Grant Lewis-Rees, of Hopeland, brought their daughters Makai and Indie to the event for the first time.

"It's a great experience to bring the family together and watch the kids enjoy it," Mrs Lewis-Rees said. Emily and Bree Porritt, of Two Rocks, come with their grandmother Mary Porritt and aunt Patricia Barker every year.

"We have taken them for the last three years and they usually dance all night once the music starts," Mrs Porritt said.

Children's entertainment was a highlight of this year's show, with performances from energetic musicians Rock 'n' Toddle and Captain Starlight drawing big crowds.

A fireworks display at the end of the night wowed onlookers as the Perth skyline lit up spectacularly to farewell the festive crowds.
