Contractor killed at Telfer mine

Operations at Newcrest’s Telfer gold mine have been temporarily put on hold after the death of a contractor this morning.

Details of the accident have not been released but Newcrest confirmed the worker had been fatally injured while working in its underground mine.

The Department of Mine and Petroleum is understood to be investigating.

The death is the second at the mine since in 18 months. In December 2013, a young contract construction worked died after a piece of pipework rolled onto him.
