Honour for 20 years of healthcare services

Anne McKenzie is seen as a global leader in the field of healthcare consumer advocacy and now her contribution has been recognised at home.

The Mt Lawley mother of four has been appointed a Member in the General Division for her efforts to incorporate the community in the healthcare process.

Princess Margaret Hospital made an innovative decision about 20 years ago by employing Mrs McKenzie as a parent advocate.

She excelled in the role, improving the hospital experience for families and setting a trend that saw similar positions opening up across the country.

Just over a decade ago, she undertook a new project as a consumer advocate with the University of WA's school of population health and the Telethon Kids Institute. Not only are families more satisfied by the added engagement, but researchers are reaping the rewards of greater input from patients and carers.

The head of UWA's school of population health, Professor Colleen Fisher, said Mrs McKenzie had sparked a "cultural shift" at the school.

"Her drive and energy in advocating for and advancing consumer and community participation in health research has led to a cultural shift among academic staff within the school - it has been amazing to witness," she said.
