Isaiah has all the Wright stuff

Isaiah has all the Wright stuff

Isaiah Wright has a heavy weight on his shoulders but he carries it with pride.

At 14, he is the sole carer for his mother Karen, who has chronic kidney failure, anxiety and depression.

"It has always just been me and her, so ever since I was little I have had to take on that extra responsibility," Isaiah said.

Isaiah is a finalist in the Young People Who Care awards, which recognise the selfless dedication of young people around the State.

Isaiah attends to cleaning, cooking and washing, as well as attending to his mother's medical needs.

"He makes sure dinner is cooked, does the washing and gets my medication ready," Ms Wright said.

"I have had bad kidney failure for 10 years and when my dad passed away three years ago, Isaiah really stepped up to help."

Ms Wright's depression and anxiety stemmed from her physical health issues.

"There are times when I contact Isaiah when he is at school because I need him to come home," she said.

Ms Wright said her son was a great companion and his care had strengthened the bond between them.

Isaiah said it was hard not having as much spare time as his friends but he did not resent his mother.

"I am not able to do most things a kid should do at my age, like go out with my friends, but I don't mind helping," he said.

He said he attended school about 70 per cent of the time, which made studying hard. "I have a tutor to help me because it can be tough," Isaiah said.
