Alycia ends race drought
Alycia Brown is making great strides to bring more women into the horse racing industry by becoming WA's only female race steward.
Ms Brown has taken up the reins as Racing and Wagering WA's latest cadet steward, breaking a 20-year run of male cadets.
Winning the cadetship is the culmination of the 24-year-old's lifelong love of horses.
"I've been around horses since I was little," Ms Brown, who grew up in Albany, said. "My dad was a horse trainer and his dad is a trainer still. I grew up around horses, worked in stables after school and it just led from there."
As a young woman, Ms Brown stands apart from many others in Australia's horse racing industry.
RWWA chief steward Brad Lewis said many female track riders and apprentices were in the industry.
But Ms Brown was WA's only female steward, he said.
Ms Brown said the cadetship would be a test but she was unfazed by taking on the male-dominated role because she had been involved in the industry for many years.
Her brother Chris did the two-year steward cadetship five years ago.
He is now a steward at Ascot.
His younger sister hopes he will be on hand to give her tips and support as she goes through the same cadetship.
