Focus on bushfire planning

The emergency services were out in force yesterday to remind people to be careful during the hot summer months, with the bushfire season expected to be above average.

Representatives from services including police, fire and rescue, SES, volunteer marine rescue, customs, the Department of Transport, Roadwise, bushfire brigades and surf lifesaving club had displays set up at Adventureland Park yesterday.

Shire of Esperance Community Emergency Services co-ordinator Mel Ammon said the event was held to raise awareness about preparing for summer, particularly people living in rural and semi-rural areas.

“The forecast is for an above average season, the soil is very dry,” Ms Ammon said.

“People should be making sure that they are ready.”

Ms Ammon said firebreaks needed to be in place by November 14, with rangers already patrolling and issueing compliance notices. She said emergency evacuation plans should be updated.
